Admission query? Just DU it on the phone

Nervous about the admission season? Want to know more about Delhi University courses and colleges?

Just pick up the phone and dial 27662507, 27662508 or 24119832. Starting on Monday, the University's tele-counselling helplines will begin taking queries from students applying to undergraduate courses for 2009-10.

"The admission helplines will answer queries that students might have about the University, admission procedure and other questions," said SK Vij, Dean Students Welfare (DSW).

Applicants can contact the DSW office at the three numbers (mentioned above) between 10 am and 5 pm on working days, for any admission related queries. Students and parents can also email their queries to dsw@du.ac.in.

"Queries will be answered by faculty members and specially trained senior students. Aspirants can get information on colleges, courses offered, cut-off list/percentage for a particular course in a college, important dates and entrance test to particular course, if any," said Vij.

The common pre-admission forms along with the information bulletin 2009-10 for Delhi University colleges will also be available from June 1 to June 15. Open Day, where parents and applicants can meet faculty and current students, will be held from May 24-31.

"The admission procedure is almost the same as last year. But, we have attempted to make SC/ST admissions more transparent this year," Vij said.

"We will be publishing a detailed booklet on the admission procedure so that SC/ST students do not face problems," he said.

There will also be an 18 per cent overall increase in the number of seats due to OBC expansion. During 2008-09 academic session, the undergraduate seats at DU went up from 35,000 to 42,000 after implementing approximately 9 per cent OBC quota.

Eateries in North Campus

Coming soon...

Accomodation in North Campus

North Campus:

1. On Campus:  All colleges in North Campus enclave have on campus hostels. The advantage of living on campus are manifold-
  • Its cheap &  convenient as you are on campus and dont incur travel expenses. A rough estimate of expenditure would be close to ~Rs.1600 per month (~Rs.1200 for food,~Rs.400 for rent, light, water etc.. so a total of ~Rs.1600 per month), however this does vary from college to college
  • You meet students from all around the country
  • You can do more of studies and extra-curriculars as you are located on campus
  • Its FUN
  • Usually rooms on-campus are small and on a shared basis
  • On campus hostels lack several facilities like AC, furniture, internet...
  • There is usually a back in time for girls ~7PM and guys ~11PM....(guys though can get away with non-compliance of deadline...girls can't)
  • Food quantities in Mess are unlimited....North campus colleges have EDIBLE FOOD
  • On-campus hostels are high on University POLITICS
2. PG Accomodation:
  • Costs will depend on the sort of accomodation you seek... i) A simple set-up with bed, fan, basic furniture and food will cost ~Rs.4000 per month
  • High end PGs are available only for Females are available at ~Rs.8000 per month. You can avail AC, internet, cooking facilities at these
  • Available within ~1Km of colleges in all areas: Vijay Nagar/Mukherjee Nagar/Kamla Nagar/Kingsway Camp/Roop Nagar
  • PGs for female usually have a back in time to ~7PM-10PM....Boys in all probability will not have a back-in time
  • Food is usually of good quality....however quantities are rationed
  • At most place ...you cannot have friends coming over
  • You meet students from all around the country & different colleges
3. Taking a Flat:
  • Lot of Flats are available in a kilometres radius of the collges: Vijay Nagar/Mukherjee Nagar/Kamla Nagar/Kingsway Camp/Roop Nagar
  • Flats are more easily leased out to girls. Guys have a tough time finding/convincing landlords
  • Landlord may have restriction on having friends over/back in time....can be worked out through negotiation if the landlord does not live on the floor right above/below
  • Rents for 2-3 bedroom flat is ~10-12K in a good locality...~6-7K in a not-so-good locality
  • Food will depend on how many stay together....Food will cost ~1500-2000 per person inclusive of everything

SOUTH CAMPUS: Will put up in some time...after talking to few friends
  • Largely the  same sort of accomodation options are available for south campus as well, however will cost ~1K more

North Campus v/s South Campus

NORTH CAMPUS
  • Feeling of being part of the University (most colleges are seperated just by a boundary wall or a road...see the map in a earlier post)
  • Making friends/attending festivals becomes easier and fun as all colleges are close by
  • Old red-brick constructions and well trimmed lawns in all colleges
  • Famous cafes/canteens- Amazing Jelly cream at Delhi School of Economics
  • Kamla Nagar/Bunglow Road- College hangout
  • Roadside Food- Bhel Puri outside Hindu/Tom Uncle’s Maggie Point
  • Easier access to study materials (course and non-course)
  • Rich Alumni history
  • Its much cheaper in North Campus than anywhere in New Delhi!!!
  • Easy to find accomodation
SOUTH CAMPUS
  • Colleges are spread locationally and there is no feeling of a University and hence it is difficult to interact with people from other colleges
  • Colleges are newly constructed and hence are better equipped but less spacious
  • South Delhi is more about the high flier life- People are more modern, metro-sexual and fashion conscious
  • The most amazing food in the country can be found at the fine eateries in South Delhi- though it sure burns a hole in your pocket
  • Several hangouts for college-goers
  • More opportunities for youngsters as a lot of offices/NGOs are located in South Delhi
  • Its expensive!!!

Delhi University Centralized forms for Undergraduate Admissions

Centralized forms for DU can be submitted starting the first week of June. You can apply to most colleges and to multiple courses using the centralized form. However some colleges like St. Stephen's College and Jesus & Mary College do not accept these forms. For getting admission to these colleges students need to purchase forms of these colleges individually (or can submit online...if the facility is provided)and submit.
